Waffle Stitch Mug Cozy with a Heart Applique

Since Valentine’s Day is just around the corner, I wanted to add another cute Valentine’s Day themed pattern to my bucket list. I love making handmade gifts and I whipped up this quick and easy Waffle Stitch Mug Cozy. Giving a handmade gift on Valentine's Day is great because it shows that you took out time from your day to create something from your heart for somebody.

I wanted to make something useful which can used on a daily basis. I have used Waffle Stitch and have added a small heart as an embellishment which is cute and fits in with the whole heart theme of Valentine's Day. This is a very simple project that can be completed in less than an hour. It makes a great gift.

The waffle stitch pattern is simply lovely and creates a nice textured look. The Waffle Stitch pattern resembles the texture of a waffle. This stitch looks great on any crochet project, be it a scarf, blanket, bag or washcloths and many more!!!!!!

Let's Start....!!!!

Round 1:-
Start with a Slip Knot.
Chain 18 + 1 for the Turning Chain.
You can adjust the size of the Mug Cozy by altering these stitches according to your requirement.
Start with any multiple of 3 + 1 Chain for the turning chain.

Round 2:-
1 Double Crochet in the Second Chain from the hook.
1 Double Crochet each in the remaining stitches.
Once you reach end, Chain 2 and use the Straight Edge Turning Chain to make the turning chain.

Straight Edge Turning Chain:-
Usually you would Chain 2, turn and start working the next round. Here is a quick tip to have a nice straight edge .
  • Insert the hook into the 1st chain from the bottom.
  • Yarn over and pull up a loop. You should have 2 loops on the hook.
  • Turn your project and insert the hook into the first stitch.
  • Yarn over and pull up a loop. You will have 3 loops on the hook.
  • Again, yarn over and pull through 2 loops. You will have 2 loops on the hook.
  • Lastly, yarn over and pull through 2 loops.
  • This will make one Double Crochet.

Round 3:-
(1 Double Crochet is already made while making the turning chain)
1 Front Post Double Crochet in the next stitch.
1 Double Crochet each in next 2 stitches.
Repeat(1 FPDC, (1 DC) * 2).
1 Double Crochet in the last stitch.
Once you reach the end use the Straight Edge Turning Chain mentioned in the previous round to make the turning chain.

How to make a Front Post Double Crochet...??:-
  • Yarn Over and  insert your hook from front to back to front around the post of the  stitch.
  • Finish the stitch as the normal Double Crochet , i.e .Yarn Over and pull up a loop, Yarn Over and pull through 2 loops on your hook, Yarn Over and  pull through remaining two loops on your hook.

Round 4:-
(1 Double Crochet is already made while making the turning chain)
1 Double Crochet in the next stitch.
1 Front post Double Crochet each in the next two stitches.
Repeat(1DC , (1 FPDC)*2).
1 Double Crochet each in the last 2 stitches.
Once you reach the end use the Straight Edge Turning Chain to make the turning chain.

Round 5 Onwards:-
Keep Repeating Round 3 and Round 4 untill the size needed.

Button Loop:-
1 Slip Stitch in each stitch untill the mid point.
Measure your Button and make chain stitches to make the loop for the button.
Slip stitch to the same stitch.
End the row with slip stitches till the end and weave off.
Sew in the button with a yarn needle on the opposite side.

Add a Small Crochet Heart applique as an embellishment. Check out the Pattern for the Heart Applique here.
