How to Make a Perfect Semi Circle With Half Double Crochets

The Basic Crochet Base Patterns are the most common element used for most of the Crochet Projects. There are of many shapes such as Crochet Squares, Crochet Circle, Crochet Rectangle , Crochet Triangle and Semi Circles. These Crochet Base Patterns are often used as a foundation for many crocheted projects, right from Clothing and Accessories like crochet shawls ,Bags and Purses to Home Decor items like Crochet Area Rugs or Tablemats

Today am sharing the tutorial on How to Make a Perfect Semi Circle With Half Double Crochets. Crochet circles and half circles are a very common design elements in crochet. They can be made with Double Crochets, Single Crochets and Half Double Crochets. With each element the Stitch Pattern differs a bit to get that perfect Semi Circle Shape.

Materials Used:-
8 Ply Cotton Yarn
4 mm Crochet Hook

Crochet Terms Used:-
US Crochet Terms

Abbreviations Used:-
Ch - Chain
HDC - Half Double Crochet
St/Sts - Stitch/Stitches
YO - Yarn Over

Notes:-
For this pattern, instead of working in circle, each Round is made by working To and Fro.
So to hide the difference in these Front side and the Back side rounds, we will be making the stitches in between each of two stitches i.e. Instead of inserting your hook only on top of the stitch, yarn over and insert your hook under the whole stitch.

Let's Start...!!!

Round 1:-
Start with a Magic Circle.
Chain 2(This wont be counted as a stitch)
4 Half Double Crochets in the Magic Circle.
Pull the yarn end to close the gap.
This will form a semi circle.
Once you reach end, Chain 2 and use the Straight Edge Turning Chain to make the Turning Chain.

Straight Edge Turning Chain:-
Usually you would Chain 2, turn and start working the next round. Here is a quick tip to have a nice straight edge .
  • Insert the hook into the 1st chain from the bottom.
  • Yarn over and pull up a loop. You should have 2 loops on the hook.
  • Turn your project and insert the hook into the first stitch.(i.e in between the Two Stitches)
  • Yarn over and pull up a loop. You will have 3 loops on the hook.
  • Yarn over and pull through all the 3 loops.
  • This will make one Half Double Crochet.

Round 2:-
(1 Half Double Crochet is already made while making the turning chain)
1 Half Double Crochet in the same stitch.(that's total 2 Half Double Crochets) - remember to make these stitches in between each stitch , as mentioned in the notes.
Repeat (2HDC) in each of the remaining stitches.
Once you reach the end Chain 2 and Use the Straight Turning Chain method mentioned in the previous round to make the Turning Chain.
8 Stitches.

Round 3:-
(1 Half Double Crochet is already made while making the turning chain)
2 Half Double Crochets in the next stitch.
Repeat (1HDC,2HDC) .
Once you reach the end Chain 2 and Use the Straight Turning Chain method to make the turning chain.
12 Stitches.

Round 4:-
(1 Half Double Crochet is already made while making the turning chain)
1 Half Double Crochet in the next stitch.
2 Half Double Crochets in the next stitch.
Repeat (1HDC*2,2HDC) .
Once you reach the end Chain 2 and Use the Straight Turning Chain method to make the turning chain.
16 Stitches.

Round 5:-
(1 Half Double Crochet is already made while making the turning chain)
1 Half Double Crochet each in the next 2 stitches.
2 Half Double Crochets in the next stitch.
Repeat (1HDC*3,2HDC) .
Once you reach the end Chain 2 and Use the Straight Turning Chain method to make the turning chain.
20 Stitches.

Round 6 Onwards:-
Keep repeating the increase pattern untill the size needed.

The increase pattern will be as below:-
Round 6 (1 HDC*4, 2HDC) - 24
Round 7 (1 HDC*5, 2HDC) - 28
Round 8 - (1 HDC*6, 2HDC) - 32
Round 9 (1 HDC*7, 2HDC) ..... and so on
Once you reach the end Chain 2 and turn and Use the Straight Turning Chain method to make the turning chain.
